Legendary Press Artist Guidelines

I. Pencillers – Sequential Art

A. Your sample should be 5-7 pages showcasing your ability to tell a story with your pencils; please do not include inks, colors or lettering on your pencils.
B. Your sample should include a variety of scenes – action, quiet, dialogue, etc.
C. Use diverse landscapes / backgrounds [fore- and mid-ground(s)] to establish where the characters are physically and in relation to one another.
D. Use a mixture of characters (male, female, normal, super, animal, monster, robotic, etc.), facial expressions and body language.
E. Use a variety of angles for dramatic effect.
F. Make sure to frame the action such that the reader’s eyes are being guided through the story.
G. Panels should be laid out to include enough space for any captions and dialogue.
H. You can submit your sequential art sample based on a script of your own or one readily available on the internet. Please indicate the source of your script.

II. Pencillers – Cover Art / Pin-Ups

A. Include 4-5 covers/pin-ups.
B. Make sure to include samples of pencils only. But feel free to also submit inked, or colored samples with or without lettering.

III. Inkers – Sequential Art

A. Submit 5-7 inked pages of consecutive story pages.
B. Inkers should follow the same basic guidelines as the pencillers, but adding depth and dimension to penciled sketches.
C. Include samples that display your understanding of light and shadow.
D. Please include pencil samples to show before and after of your inking.

IV. Colorists – Sequential Art

A. Submit 5-7 colored pages showing how you can bring pages to life.
B. Use different subject matter and styles to exhibit your knowledge of color. For example the colors you would use for a jungle setting would be different from a story taking place underwater or in a desert.
C. Show examples where light and shading give a three-dimension feel to your work.
D. Samples should how you convey different moods and aid in the telling of the story through color.
E. Please include pencil only, and pencil and ink samples to compare to your fully colored samples.

V. Letterer – Sequential Art

A. Submit one-sheet samples of your lettering style showing word balloons, dialogue fonts and sound effect fonts that you use.
B. Submit 3-5 pages of sequential art showcasing your lettering style for word balloons, captions, character dialogue and your ability to make sound effects “look” like they sound.
C. Use examples that show how you can lead the reader through the story while not intruding on the artwork you are lettering.
D. You should be adept at designing logos, comic book titles, and story titles, include examples of them.
E. As a letterer, you should have a strong grammatical, spelling and punctuation skills.
